"The best book yet about the financial crises that have swept the world in recent years. Desai offers a comprehensive, critical survey that will unsettle ideologues right and left. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the global economy."--Paul Krugman, Princeton University

"Padma Desai attacks head-on fundamental questions about the compatibility of small emerging country economies with inherently volatile global financial markets--questions that have too often been ignored or glossed over in the policy debate."--Paul Volcker, Former Chairman of the Federal Reserve

"Padma Desai's thorough and insightful analysis of the financial crises that have devastated many emerging market economies over the past several years is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the downside of the global financial system. Her forceful policy recommendations deserve to be considered at the highest level."--George Soros

"Padma Desai's stimulating and path-breaking comparative analysis of the pace and sequencing of financial liberalization processes has profound implications for the planning of national policies and the structure of international financial cooperation. The book makes an outstanding contribution to our understanding of these complex issues, and to the designing of sensible proposals for rebuilding the international financial architecture."--Manmohan Singh, Former Finance Minister of India

"Professor Padma Desai has long stood as a voice for caution, pragmatism, and common sense against those who would impose untested economic models on economies in transition. In this book, she turns her attention to the central asymmetry of the world financial system: rich countries retain the privilege of managing their economies, while poor countries, having liberalized their financial markets prematurely, remain hostage to volatile capital flows, and when the inevitable crisis strikes, have to succumb to ill-fitting arrangements designed for them by the International Monetary Fund. This is a book that should be read widely."--Dani Rodrik, Harvard University

"This fascinating book presents an impressive epic on the financial crises that have afflicted a large portion of the world. While comparing alternative views for the remedy, it presents truly provocative criticisms on the IMF's former policy of trying to sustain free capital mobility for countries facing crisis. Based on the most informed knowledge of this subject but presented in a nontechnical form, with lucid descriptions of familiar crises, it will be appreciated by students and scholars as well as a broader intellectual audience."--Koichi Hamada, President, Economic and Social Research Institute, Cabinet Office of the Japanese Government
Padma Desai is Gladys and Roland Harriman Professor of Comparative Economic Systems and Director of the Center for Transition Economies at Columbia University. She was president of the Association for Comparative Economic Studies in 2001. She is author of "The Soviet Economy" and "Perestroika in Perspective".

"Drawing on over 25 years of mediation practice, Margulies has provided a very practical and useful book. The many case examples, both positive and negative, reinforce the need for mental health professionals to help families make their way through the painful process of divorce while avoiding the pitfalls of the adversarial legal system. The overall organization is logical, and the book is written in accessible language without resort to complicated labels or arcane arguments. This is an excellent guide that is a great addition to the literature."--Hugh McIsaac, MSW, former director, Oregon Family Institute

"Sure to become the standard reference for therapists who work with clients facing divorce. Margulies takes the mystique out of the legal side of divorce and gives therapists everything they need to know to offer wise counsel to their divorcing clients. He encourages therapists to be proactive and to stake a larger claim in helping clients achieve a peaceful, rational divorce. His blow-by-blow description of the anatomy of a destructive divorce, and of how therapists can intervene at each step to lead clients in a better direction, is pure gold."--Richard A. Warshak, PhD, author of Divorce Poison: Protecting the Parent-Child Bond From a Vindictive Ex

"Margulies provides the working therapist with an organized, systematic, comprehensive, and pragmatic guide to the many processes and decisions that have an impact on the experience of divorce. This is not a trivial thing; every therapist should be knowledgeable about divorce, yet it is not well understood by many. In addition to practitioners, graduate students and clinical trainees will find this a valuable text."--Robert A. Simon, PhD, private practice, San Diego, California

"As a mediator and a lawyer, Margulies translates his knowledge of the legal process of divorce into language that mental health professionals can easily understand. In this helpful and positive book, he views divorce through the lens of a family systems professional, showing how the emotional, legal, and financial aspects are interdependent. In reframing the best interests of the child to mean the best interests of the family, Marguiles shows how we can help divorcing couples learn to work cooperatively as parents, with the goal of having a good divorce."--Constance Ahrons, PhD, author of The Good Divorce and We're Still Family

"This book serves as a manual for clinical psychologists, family therapists, clinical social workers, counsellors, and psychiatrists. It is also a must for the students of psychology in marital issues and in the field of divorce. Besides the good introduction on the topic of divorce and the mission of the therapist, Margulies follows a systematic way of presentation that explores the meaning of mutuality, separation, and divorce."--Journal for the Study of Marriage and Spirituality
(Journal for the Study of Marriage and Spirituality )

Sam Margulies, PhD, JD, has been a pioneer in the field of mediation for 28 years. Instrumental in defining the field, he has taught mediation for 20 years, has made numerous presentations throughout the United States, and has published extensively. His book Getting Divorced without Ruining Your Life was one of the first to assert that divorce can be done decently, and without the devastation associated with traditional adversarial divorce. Dr. Margulies lives and practices mediation in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Self-help and how-to books should clarify complex issues without oversimplifying them. Irwin's books do just that. He includes timelines, check lists, and tables which document and illustrate the often thorny process of home buying and selling. In his book on home buying, he provides informative sections on buying from a builder, buying vacation homes, and buying a vacant lot. First-time buyers will find Irwin's book more readable than William G. Connolly's New York Times Guide To Buying or Building a Home (Times Bks., 1984) and somewhat more explanatory than H.L. Kibbey's First Home Buying Guide (Panoply Pr. Inc., 1988). In his book on house selling, Irwin discusses the problems encountered when offering a dwelling for sale. His "tips and traps" approach is used to acquaint inexperienced sellers with hiring a competent broker, negotiating a commission, deferring taxes on the sale, honoring disclosure obligations, and coping with a house that won't sell. Chapters like "Converting a Sale into a Rental" and "Selling a Condo or Coop" give practical advice in plain English. Mathematical examples help demystify the gains tax and seller financing sections. This volume improves upon Edith Lank's Selling Your Home with an Agent (Reston c/o Prentice-Hall, 1982). Paired with its companion on buying a home, it provides an alternative to Joel Makower's equally competent How To Buy a House and How To Sell a House ( LJ 12/1/89). The set is recommended for public libraries.

"The best Anglophone synoptic history of Mexico...Knight's volumes offer both unity of approach and authorial voice and a considerable level of detail...The dry humour and invocations of other histories, not to mention the sparkling writing, make the book a delight to read...a book that displays both high sophistication and accessibility." Eric Van Young, University of California at San Diego, The International History Review

"...an essential resource not only for historians of Mexico and Latin America but also of the European overseas expansion. Knight's work represents scholarly synthesis as its best: it offers both information and interpretation and is upheld by a massive body of documentation." Bulletin of the Society of Spanish & Portuguese History

Professor Knight's new book is a fine one. It is a piece of scholarship well-presented, interesting, and very suggestive." Itinerario

"Knight .... has written a general history of Mexico that synthesizes a rich base of published sources... Recommended." Choice

This book is one in a three volume general history of Mexico, comprising (I) the PreConquest period to 1521, (II) the Colonial period from 1521 to 1821, and (III) the National period from 1821-present. These books give a comprehensive narrative and analysis of Mexican history, focusing especially on political, economic, and social organization. Balancing both a 'bottom-up'(popular) and a 'top-down' (elite) perspective, they seek, where possible, to locate Mexico within broader, comparative patterns of historical change and conflict.
